I had a spinal cord stimulator implanted in September 2007. The results have been better than I expected. The goal was to relieve my pain by 50%. I had lower back, hip and leg pain. Dr. James Fulghum has been with Carolina Back Institute since 1999. He has been practicing medicine with a specialty in neurosurgery for over thirty years.
Dr. Fulghum’s undergraduate degree was earned at North Carolina State University. He attended Medical School at the University of North Carolina graduating with honors. His internship and residency was served at Duke.
Which is Dr. Fulghum’s ACC team? He remains a North Carolina State fan.
Along with his distinguished medical career, Dr. Fulghum served his country. He is a retired major from the US Army.
Dr. Fulghum is especially proud of his wife Mary Susan Fulghum, a former gynecologist in Raleigh, as well as his daughters Molly and Emily.
Dr. Fulghum’s interests include following politics and spending time at his farm where he hosts an annual pig pickin’ for co-workers and friends.
Dr. Mike Gwinn is a founding physician of Carolina Back Institute.
Dr. Gwinn is board-certified in both Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Electromyography. He graduated cum laude from Ohio State University with a degree in Biochemistry. Upon graduation, Dr. Gwinn began earning his medical degree at the Ohio State University College of Medicine. He completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Ohio State University Hospitals in 1990.
Dr. Gwinn performs EMG’s, BOTOX injections, Euflexxa injections, independent medical exams and second opinions.
Dr. Gwinn enjoys gardening, reading, running and spending time with his children.
Dr. Catherine Duncan is the Medical Director of Carolina Back Institute. She joined the practice in June of 2000.
Dr. Duncan is board-certified in both Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine. She earned her medical degree as Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her residency at Case Western Reserve University.
Dr. Duncan serves as Medical Director for Carolina Back Institute’s pain management program, the Prevail Program. The Prevail Program is a team-based approach enabling participants to overcome pain and regain function. She also performs fluoroscopically-guided epidural steroid injections, facet sacroiliac joint injections, radiofrequency ablation, osteopathic manipulation therapy, prolotherapy, and EMG’s.
Dr. Duncan is an accomplished classical guitarist and a black belt in martial arts. She also enjoys reading, gardening and other outdoor activities with her husband and daughters.
Dr. Godbout is board-certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He graduated summa cum laude from the Ohio State University prior to earning his medical degree at Wright State University School of Medicine. He joined the practice in 2004.
Dr. Godbout completed his residency at the Medical College of Virginia, where he received the Clinical Excellence Award and trained in the nation’s first ACGME accredited physical medicine and rehabilitation interventional pain program. Since then, Dr. Godbout has served as Team Physician for Virginia Commonwealth University Athletics, and Staff Medical Officer at Richmond Community Hospital. Dr. Godbout performs fluoroscopically-guided epidural steroid injections, facet and sacroiliac join injections, radiofrequency ablation, BOTOX® injections, and spinal cord stimulation trials.
In his spare time, Dr. Godbout enjoys spending time with his young children, coaching sports teams, and cheering for the Carolina Hurricanes.
Dr. Mark Reznik joined the practice in May 2009.
Dr. Reznik is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Reznik received his Doctor of Osteopathy from the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey, School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford, NJ. During medical school, his achievements included the Champion’s scholarship for Academic Excellence and the Dean’s Research Award. He completed his residency at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA. After residency, Dr. Reznik completed a one year fellowship in pain management and interventional spine at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA.
Dr. Reznik performs fluoroscopically-guided epidural steroid injections, facet and sacroiliac joint injections, and radiofrequency ablation.
In his spare time, Dr. Reznik and his wife enjoy cycling, tennis and traveling.
Dr. Krishna Bhat joined Carolina Back Institute in March 2012.
Dr. Bhat is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He graduated from University of California, Davis in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences. He completed medical school at the American University of the Caribbean in 2001 and residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Rush University Medical Center in 2005. From 2004 to 2005, he served as Chief Resident of the program.
Since the completion of training, Dr. Bhat has been in private practice. He is an active member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, American Academy of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine, Pain Society of the Carolinas, and International Spine Intervention Society.
Dr. Bhat performs fluoroscopically-guided epidural injections, facet and sacroiliac joint injections, radiofrequency ablation, spinal cord stimulation trials, peripheral joint and trigger point injections, BOTOX® injections, EMGs and independent medical exams.
Leisure interests include traveling, spending time with his family and young daughters, as well as playing golf, tennis and basketball.
